Chairwoman, Senate Subcommittee on Children and Families

The people of Maryland elected Barbara Mikulski to be their United States Senator because she is a fighter for the day-to-day needs of Marylanders and the long range needs of the nation.

Senator Mikulski, determined to make a difference in her community, began her career as a social worker in Baltimore City devoting her efforts to vulnerable populations such as incarcerated women, foster youth and children in Head Start.  She has continued that advocacy throughout her career in public office. Senator Mikulski has been a strong supporter of federal early education programs, such as Head Start and the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG). She also supports increasing the Child Care Tax Credit, which gives parents a tax credit for a percentage of their child care expenses.

Senator Mikulski was named Chairwoman of the Senate Subcommittee on Children and Families in January 2011. In her first hearing as Chairwoman, the subcommittee examined the benefits of investing in early childhood education and care. The subcommittee’s second hearing was focused on quality and safety issues related to the CCDBG.

From community activist in Baltimore to the United States Senate, Senator Mikulski has never stopped fighting for families. She is proud to be the Senator from Maryland and for Maryland.
